High School Adventure Sailing

High School Adventure Sailing classes are Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. This class is ideally suited for sailors 13-18. This course is designed to provide fun, safe exposure to a range of sailboats including the 420, Laser, and Sunfish without the emphasis on racing. Sailors will learn basic seamanship including:

  • Launching
  • Retrieving
  • Docking
  • Knot tying, rigging, sailing terminology
  • How to operate a boat safely

Adventure Sailing

Adventure Sailing classes are Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-4 p.m. This class is ideally suited for sailors 7-12. This course is designed to provide fun, safe exposure to a range of sailboats including the 420 and some small keelboats, without the emphasis on racing. Sailors will learn basic seamanship including:

  • Launching
  • Retrieving
  • Docking
  • Knot tying, rigging, sailing terminology
  • How to operate a boat safely

Beginning Laser/Sunfish

This class is ideal for sailors 13-18 who have aged out of the Optimist and aren’t interested in the 420. Sailors may bring their own boats or use a CYC boat. No prior sailing experience is required for this course. This class will focus on safety, fun, and learning the basic skills needed to sail, including:

 

  • Wind awareness
  • Points of sail
  • Sailing terminology
  • Knots
  • Tacking
  • Gybing

Optimist Beginner

Optimist Beginner classes are offered in full-day formats. Boats are provided, but sailors have the option of bringing their own. This class is ideally suited for sailors age 7-11 and will focus on safety, fun, and learning the basic skills needed to sail, including:

  • Wind awareness
  • Points of sail
  • Sailing terminology
  • Knots
  • Tacking
  • Gybing

Optimist Intermediate

Optimist Intermediate classes are suitable for sailors age 8-11 who have completed at least two sessions of the Optimist Beginner course, or an equivalent. Courses are offered in a one-week-long, full-day session. Boats are provided, but sailors have the option of bringing their own. Older sailors interested in racing should consider owning a boat. In addition to becoming proficient in the skills from the Opti Beginner course, sailors will also be introduced to:

  • Weather
  • Sail trim
  • Hull trim
  • Basic rules of racing
  • Equipment maintenance

Optimist Advanced

Optimist Advanced sailors compete in either Green fleet or White, Blue, and Red fleet regattas hosted by local clubs throughout the summer. Parents are expected to volunteer time to drive to various events. Please contact the CYC Junior Program Director for a provisional list of events. Students must provide their own boats. Classes will focus on refining boat handling and practicing other skills needed to become proficient racers, including:

  • Starting
  • The Racing Rules of Sailing
  • Racing tactics

Opti advanced sailors are required to have the following for both practice and race days:

  • US Coast Guard approved life jacket with whistle attached
  • 27’-30’ Floating bow line (1/4” min diameter), secured to mast step
  • One or more bailers that are secured to the boat
  • 3 Air bags, must be firmly inflated an able to hold air
  • Rudder retainer clip (secures rudder to transom)
  • Daggerboard lanyard (to prevent it from floating away if capsized)
  • Mast tie in system (line and/or locking collar)
  • Bridal/Mainsheet connection, must be a shackle type
  • Mainsheet Bridal, no loser then approx.. 4” from boom
  • Paddle or Praddle
  • Additional sail ties
  • Appropriate gear/clothing: gloves, hat, closed toe shoes, no cotton based clothing
  • Water/Food

420 Beginner

Beginner 420 classes are offered for sailors ages 12-17 . Beginner 420 class is ideal for older students with no experience, or younger sailors transitioning from the Opti. Boats are provided. There will be two sailors per boat, and both students will get experience both skippering and crewing. Teamwork will be emphasized, along with safety, fun and learning the basic skills need to sail, including:

  • Wind awareness
  • Points of sail
  • Sailing terminology
  • Knots
  • Tacking
  • Gybing

420 Intermediate

420 Intermediate classes are designed for sailors age 12-17 who have completed at least one session of the 420 Beginner course. In addition to becoming proficient in the skills already practiced, sailors will be introduced to:

420 Advanced

Race Teams

For sailors who have already mastered the basics and are ready to test their racing abilities against the other top junior sailors in the country, CYC offers a Travel Team option. This class is available in the:

  • Optimist
  • C420
  • Laser

Sailors must provide their own boat or charter a boat from CYC. Parental involvement is expected to facilitate travel, trailering, and chaperoning. Each team will typically have a parent liaison, subject to the approval of the CYC Junior Program Director. This person will work with the Junior Program Director, coaches, and other parents to help plan and communicate logistics. The teams will compete in local SAYRA events as well as travel to high-level competitions around the country.

Optis meet 9 AM – 4PM on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays

Laser/Sunfish/420 meets 11 AM - 5 PM on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays
